Begin doing what you want to do now. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand, and melting like a snowflake. ~Marie Ray

This last Monday, the 25th, was the 1001st day since beginning my 101 list.  My second list of 101 things is made and will be shared with you all soon enough.  I originally planned on writing this post outlining the things that didn't get done on my first list and give the reasons I didn't get them done.  But then, something Taelin did shifted my thinking about what I needed to write.

We were on our way to preschool/work Tuesday and I was trying to gather all the things we needed to take with us; blanket and sheet for rest time, lunch for her, lunch for me, phone/wallet/keys/workbag, etc, etc.  With Tucker safely in the garage and the front door open, I tried one-handed to get Taelin's coat on her as I nudged her towards the car.  On our way down the sidewalk she suddenly stopped, gasped and exclaimed with a voice of wonder, "Wait!  Look at that incredibly beautiful sunrise Mama!"

I had noticed the sunrise about 15 minutes earlier as I was making our lunches and Taelin was brushing her hair and teeth.  At that point, it was a beautiful combination of pink and blue and I had stopped for a moment.  I hadn't really thought anything of stopping to notice it.  Until, Taelin did on our way to the car.

After we stopped together and noticed the colors we saw and how strange it was that it was cold enough to see our breath but still have the sun shining (clearly an Oregon girl and used to cold = cloudy/rainy), we got in the car and in just a few minutes arrived at her school.

It was on the continued drive to work that I realized what this post needed to be about.

When I started this list, 1003 days ago now, there was a blanket of grief covering our lives.  We had "made it" through the first holiday season without John.  His absence was felt every single day by the pictures hanging in our home, the songs coming through our speakers and the stories we wished we could share with him about Taelin. Man, he adored her. There hadn't been a day that I hadn't cried. A piece of Joe was missing.  We were going through the motions of living, but we weren't living.  There was no stopping to notice sunrises. It was like we had stopped, not knowing how to go on...not wanting to go on without him.

But something in me knew we needed to.  Taelin had just turned two.  We needed to go on...without him.  So inspired by my brother-in-law and his own list, I made this list and filled it with things I knew I loved to do and things I wanted to do with Taelin.  I filled it things that scared me but wanted to try and with places to go.  I filled it with things to do for others and things I hoped would help us really live again.

And now here I am.  Not missing John any less really.  My trip to Boston last week punctuated that.  I wasn't expecting to tear up when I arrived at the airport and thought of the last time I had arrived at the same airport the day after he died.  I wasn't expecting to tear up on the trolley tour I took as I listened to the guide that said "horse" the same as John did. We still hear songs that make us think of him and wish that Taelin and her Papa would have had more time.  No, we don't miss him any less but we did keeping going.

I got 82 of my 101 things done.  There are many things I did in the spirit of the list, in the spirit of living, too many to remember really.  And I celebrated the last day of my list thinking about my great life; my daughter, my husband, my family, my friends, my career, books, music, writing, impromptu dance parties and sunrises.

On this eve of Thanksgiving, I am grateful for all those things and for this list... this list that lifted the blanket of grief and helped us remember to live. The list that helped us to wait and notice the sunrises.

16 days and counting!

Yikes!!!  I only have 16 days left in my 1001 days.  I meant to do this post awhile ago to take stock and see what was left, but, well, I didn't.  So I am here now, looking at what's left and what is realistic to get done!

Right now, I have 75% of my list complete.  (My brain says, "Crap!  That's a C, Jodie!)  But I am choosing to say out loud..."Yay me!"  Here is what is still missing...  (The bold ones are the ones I think I can/or want to still get done.)

  • Kayak in Hawaii (It was a nice idea...but unless I win the lottery in the next 16 days, not going to happen!)
  • Write a love letter to my husband (not feeling like I need to...he knows exactly how I feel everyday)
  • Write a list of 50 things I like about myself  (I am not looking forward to this one but not going to count it out yet)
  • Make a list of all family and friend birthday and anniversaries (that's what Facebook is for)
  • Complete a coloring book
  • Get to my goal weight (yeah...not going to happen)
  • Go to a wine tasting
  • Take a cake decorating class
  • Make a list of my 50 favorite songs
  • Make a font out my handwriting
  • Go skiing again
  • Go to a movie by myself
  • List my top 10 movies
  • Scrapbook an album of John for Taelin
  • Play and finish a game of Monopoly with Joe without cheating (This is in the plan for this weekend...and if I actually do it there is sure to be a story.)
  • Play bingo
  • Complete the 100 Snapshots Challenge
  • Renew my passport (I looked into doing this...and it would be more money than I want to spend right now.  If we end up wanted to go somewhere we need them...then I will do it.)
  • Redo the bedroom: paint, new furniture, new bedding (No new furniture...we went to Disneyland instead.)
  • Write a letter to Taelin about how Joe and I met
  • Walk a cancer walk in memory of John
  • Write a fan letter
  • Finish a wordfind book
  • Maintain my goal weight
  • Finish writing another 101 things list by the end of 1001 days (any suggestions?)
  • Celebrate Day 1001!
If I get the ones that are in bold done, that will put me at 81%. And, I can live with that.  There is really only one (two really) that I am disappointed about.  I do think that at some point, I will need to make a different list..of all the things that I did in the spirit of the list and I have a feeling if I do that I will find myself well over 101 items.  But until November 25th, I will keep my focus on finishing the current list and see how far I get!

Time is an old firmly rooted tree; we are the breeze rustling its leaves. ~Terri Guillemets

49 done
15 in progress
37 undone

365 days left

November 25, 2013 will be the last day of my 1001 days.  It seems reasonable that I stop for a bit and take stock at what is left, what I think will get done and what might not.  Of the 15 items on the list that are in progress I am hopeful that they will move to the done column by this time next year.  It is the 37 items that are not done that are what I am looking at a little more closely.

There are some that will be easily taken care of.  Buying a lottery ticket, paying for someone's Starbucks, playing bingo, cake decorating class...those are just a matter of scheduling or doing.

There are some that are already scheduled, we are going to Sunriver for New Years and are planning on going skiing, Christmas is coming so the gingerbread house is going to turn into a themed party (2 birds, 1 stone) and Taelin is going to have to share the Santa picture this year.

There are some that just aren't going to happen...kayaking in Hawaii (unless I win the lottery) or getting new bedroom furniture.  There are just some things that happened (kitchen remodel, back surgery, Disneyland) and there is just only so much money.  This is especially true with Joe's bank uncertainty.

And then there are those that I look at and just kind of don't want to do anymore.  Those honestly are the hardest ones for me think about.  At the time of making the list they sounded like a fun/cute/good idea but now I just feel like I want to spend my time differently.  Writing a fan letter, doing a word find, using chopsticks, juggling 3 balls....I suppose I could do them but they just don't sound super inviting.  Do I do them anyway or can I abandon them?  There are things that I have done that weren't on the list that I have been in the spirit of the list and in some ways I think that is more important.  The 100 snapshot photography challenge is a perfect example.  Put it on my list to make me take more pictures but I now find myself six months into a photo a day challenge that I never intended.  Still thinking on that...

One thing is for sure.  I am having a great time and I am looking forward to this next year.  There are some big things coming up this year!  A trip to Yellowstone Park, a drive in movie, a full day at the beach, and glass blowing just to name a few.  What a year it will be!

501 days done...500 to go!

Today marks one day over the half way point of my 1001 days.  I thought it appropriate that I check in with the list and do a status update of sorts.

As of today, I have completely 39 of my 101 items.  Of the 62 items left, I have 18 that are "in progress".   So, I do have to say that overall I am pretty satisfied with where I am on the list.

There a few things that are turning out to be more difficult than I originally, others were or are going to be  pretty easy, and still others leave me scratching my head as to why I even put them on the list.  I don't know that I will really be able to finish everything on the list but I am hopeful.

I guess the next 500 days will tell...

Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it. ~Buddha

A little over a year ago I was feeling a little lost.  I felt like my life was just a series of actions that I repeated day after day.  Work, cook, clean, take care of Taelin, sleep, grocery shop, etc.  They were all things I had to do and only a few of them were things I enjoyed.  I was also grieving John's death and was helplessly watching Joe do the same.  I was living my life but I wasn't living.

And then I stumbled on my brother-in-law's blog which had a secret tab of sorts.  It listed his 101 things to complete in 1001 days.  It looked and felt a little like a bucket list...but without such a final feel to it.  (We had been feeling that feeling enough as it was.)  As I read through his list, I felt like I was getting to know him a little better and was starting to see part of who he wanted to become.  I stayed up for hours that night scouring http://dayzeroproject.com/ and began to create my own list.

Looking at the list now, I can see that many of the things I put on the list were things I used to do but for whatever reason didn't anymore.  Some of them were focused on newer interests I had but needed a gentle push to not give up on them.  Some of them were geared towards self-reflection and personal growth.  Some of them were geared to making me do something that I had never done before.  None of those thoughts were formed enough back then, I was just trying to fill an emptiness that I felt.  The list represented looking ahead to what was next and it was very much needed.

So, here I am. 370 days into my list; just past the year one mark and it seems fitting that I pause for a bit and reflect on the progress I have made.  In technical terms, I have completed 29 of my 101 items.  Of the 72 items that are left, 19 of them are "in progress".  For the most part those are the ones that are "weekly" or "monthly" goals...something that can't really get checked off until the end.  Honestly, I am feeling good about the numbers.

But it isn't quite as easy as just looking at the numbers, I suppose.  The real question of progress can't really be measured in numbers, but rather in feelings.  I say that only because it was how I was feeling that drove my purpose for creating the list in the first place. So then, you might ask....how am I feeling?

First, I can't believe that it has been a year already.  There have been so many wonderful memories about this past year, many of them directly related to the list.  This very blog, for example, is a direct result of my list.  I had wanted to start a blog for some time, just to give me a place to write but didn't have a clue what I could blog about.  It isn't hard for me (most weeks) to find things to blog about and it gives me the accountable for some of the other things that I might otherwise ignore.  Taelin's first picnic, our recent San Diego trip, my new love for yoga (although you may recall the first class was a little rough)...those things and more have been wonderful and have made this year feel "full."

But while this year has been full of wonderful things, this has also been a challenging year.  The kitchen fire which led to a remodel and Joe's back surgery and recovery were definitely big challenges but were all created externally and somehow were easier to manage. This blog gave me a place to vent the hard parts and celebrate the accomplishments, both of which were necessary.

It was the internal challenges though, the ones I created for myself via this list have been the much harder to endure.  For instance, getting to my goal weight...I scratch my head even wondering what more I can write about that here.  I have more posts about my weight loss than any other topic...and I am not much further right now than I was a year ago.  That doesn't make me feel so great.  I have written a little bit about my work and about education and what I suppose could be my disillusionment with several aspects of what it means to be "teacher."  Just thank your lucky stars that I have only found a few quotes that fit how I am feeling about that because otherwise you might just stop coming and reading.

But for the most part, I am overjoyed and ecstatic with this whole project.  It has put me in touch with a part of me that I had lost and has helped me learn to look outside of my norm and embrace change.  I have shared food with friends at new restaurants, looked for opportunities to show random acts of kindness, read the best book I have ever read, started new Christmas traditions, been inspired by the words of other people and found gratitude in everyday things.  Without this project, none of that would be true.

So, what's next?  I have a list of recipes that I want to try that will take me far and above the 50 I wanted to get to.  There is a stack of books (on the bookshelf and on my iPad) just waiting to be read.  There are vacations that need to be saved for.  There are few skills that need to be learned (cake decorating and and using chopsticks) and some skills that need to be put to good use (there are 3 different photography goals on the list).  There are some easy ones (paying for someone's Starbucks) and then are more difficult tasks ahead (making a scrapbook album for Taelin of John).  I need to keep working on those things I don't like about myself. There is still a lot to get done.

It only seems appropriate to thank you those of you that read.  It helps knowing that you are out there. You are the ones that I envision sitting across from at the coffee shop when I snuggled up here on my couch.  I forget sometimes that you are out there, because you are so quite. But I am quickly reminded that you are there when I run into you out and about or get a email from you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I didn't really know what this list would lead too.  I didn't even really know if I would get that far.  But here I am; I think, a better person for it.  I guess the biggest thing that I have realized is that I need to be an active participant in my own life.  I need to be more aware of what is going on and be aware of how my actions (or inactions) can affect life.  It is up to me how I spend my time and who I spend it with.  We always have choices....always.  They aren't always the ones that we thought we would choose or the ones that others would hope we would choose.  It is up to each of us to make those choices and then be able to live with them.  If I had a glass of champagne I would say "Cheers!  Here is to another year!"

Revision of the List

I made my list on March 1st of 2011. Thirteen days into my list, I had to make a revision. You can read this if you want to know all about my Rubix cube debacle.  At that point, I was a little nervous that I was changing things so soon, but I got over it pretty quickly.  The Rubix cube now officially belongs to Taelin and every once and awhile I find it when I am cleaning and start shaking my head again.  Stupid puzzle.

Since then, number 68 has just been a line of question marks.  It bugged me a bit when I would notice it, but shook it off knowing that at some point I would be inspired by something that I just had to put on my list and that would be that.  And that would have probably been true except that tonight when I was reviewing my list to look at what might be next, I got an unpleasant nagging feeling as I scrolled past two other things on my list.  It was the same unpleasant nagging feeling I have had for awhile every time I scrolled past them.  So...tonight... for some reason, I have decided that my list needed some revising.

First, I suppose I should admit to what I am taking out.  Number 34 and 35 both reference writing letters; one was to be to my mom, the other to my dad.  Without going into the long psychology of it all (which I am sure could keep a therapist busy for months) it just comes down to the fact that I don't want to do it.  This list is about personal growth and enjoyment and I don't think doing either of those things would serve my list's purpose.  So, they are out.  I already feel better.

That being done, I am left with 3 of my 101 undefined.  I was willing to let one float out there unknown, but 3?  Not so much.  So...here are the new (and I think, improved) revisions to my list.

34. Learn a new word every week  (This will be good for me.  Joe is constantly using words that I don't know.  I have thought for awhile that my vocabulary could be expanded, so here is my chance.)
35. Simplify my life in 10 tangible ways (A dear friend once gave me a sign that said simplify...I need to embrace it a little more)
68. Complete the 100 Snapshots Challenge (I am excited about this addition.  I just kind of stumbled upon this and think it will be a great addition for several reasons.)

So, that is what is completely new.

In one final revision (for now), I am reclassifying number 95.  Back in May, I had decided to make Taelin the theme of my A-Z photos.  I even went as far as making an A-Z list and having it taped up on the inside of my kitchen cupboard.  I had started on it, but then lost track of it.  The cupboard that the list was taped in was the one that had to be ripped out because of the fire and when I pulled the list off when I was emptying the cupboard I just threw it out.  For another reason that would keep the same therapist mentioned above even more busy, I really don't want to spend my time with Taelin just taking pictures of her.  I will take pictures when I can, but I am not going to forgo having an experience with her so I can take a picture.  So, while I am keeping the A-Z photography list, I am changing the status from "in progress" to "not started" and will hope that inspiration will strike again for a different theme.

I think that is enough revision for the moment.  And now that it is taken care of, I can go back to scrolling through and picking what is up next!

50 days down...951 to go...

Today marks the first 50 days of my 1001 days to complete my list.  I have made progress on my list and while I like checking things off of lists, this particular list has done some unexpected things.  As time goes on, I would expect that the excitement for completing this list will come and go, but there isn't a day in the past 50 days that I haven't thought about it.  So...here are some things I have noticed in the last 50 days.

First of all, I realized how much I miss writing and how much I look forward to writing on this blog.  I will be the first to admit the kind of writing I enjoy doing isn't going to bring me to the point that I will need any kind of publisher, but I do enjoy storytelling and this blog has given me the opportunity to do that.  In addition to storytelling, it has given all those jumbled up thoughts in my head a place to go.  There have been a few times that my posts have served as a way for me to process what I am thinking and I walk away from the computer with more clarity than when I sat down.

The second thing that I noticed is how much more I am looking for opportunities to be kind.  I wouldn't consider myself an unkind person, but I think I am not abnormal in that it can be easy to get wrapped up in ones own trials and troubles.  It is easy to forget there are situations around me that warrant some attention, and at times, empathy and understanding.  I am not claiming to be any kind of Mother Teresa (in fact I am trying hard to steer away from any kind of religious conversation) but I will say I have considered what it would be like to walk in other people's shoes more since starting my work on the list.

Another unexpected result of me starting this list and this blog is how it has inspired others.  Obviously I didn't come up with this idea on my own and found my own inspiration from others.  And even though one of the things on my list was to inspire someone else to make a list, for some reason I didn't really expect people to give me credit.  It is a little humbling, for me anyway, for someone to say that they were inspired by something I did.  There are a couple of people that have started there own list (making #83 officially checked off), but there are even others that have modified the idea to fit what is going on in their life.  One new recipe a week, starting their own blog.....  Who knows what their own reasons are for wanting to add this into their life?  I don't even think I really know why this whole list thing struck such a cord in me....but it did.  And no matter their reason, it excites me that I have may have had a part in it.

Finally, I think the thing that was most unexpected was that I didn't expect this whole thing to be such a learning experience for me.  What I have been able to think about and put into words in the last 50 days is kind of like writing my own self-help book...and I wonder what I am going to learn next?  Kind of exciting and terrifying all at the same time.

So, if you are still reading this or any other of my blog posts...thank you.  The comments that you make here on the blog or when I see you in person, remind me that I am writing not only for myself, but for you as well (and knowing you are here makes me feel slightly less crazy) so keep them coming!

The List

I have been a list girl for quite some time.  I love making lists and crossing things off.  If I am feeling stressed or overloaded with too many things to get done, there is nothing that helps me more than making a list.

I have also been a wanting-to-start-a-blog girl for awhile too.  However, I couldn't on earth imagine what in the world I would blog about.  Enter...Charlie Capp, my soon-to-be brother-in-law.  Last week, when looking at his blog for an image from a card he had made, I noticed something I hadn't seen before. He had a list of 101 things that he wanted to accomplish in 1001 days.  Do I need to say it again?  There was a list.  I went to www.dayzeroproject.com.  There were a lot of people that had made lists.

So...I made a list.

The first thing I did from my list-start a blog.  And for me, I hope it will be a blog about my journey to complete, in 1001 days, the 101 things I put on my list.  Some of the things on my list will be easy and some will be more difficult.  Some will bring me great joy and others are sure to bring tears.  But in the end, checking this list off isn't what I want this to be all about.  I hope to learn more about myself and others around me.  I hope I stop and enjoy the little things before I don't have to the chance to enjoy them.  I hope those that mean the most to me, will know it.

One thing done...100 more to go.  I have 998 days to finish the rest. Join me, won't you?
